Ocean Resort & Casino in Atlantic City, NJ: A Review

Ocean Resort & Casino in Atlantic City, NJ: A Review

We had a great time at Ocean on our girls trip! Read more about our trip here. Read on here to find out more about Ocean Resort and Casino in Atlantic City NJ.

Price:

Our price per night varied wildly. Wednesday and Thursday nights were less than $100 while Saturday night was nearly $400. Our stay was in mid-June and we booked about a month ahead of time. Overall, the total was within our budgets so we were happy, but if you're budget conscious consider a weeknight stay instead of the weekend.

Location:

We did not venture far beyond the resort so proximity to other attractions was not a priority for us. However, we were right on the beach, with an ocean view, and the resort was on the boardwalk. The nearest boardwalk shops were nothing special but once we got nearer to the Hard Rock area on the boardwalk the shops became more like what you expect from a boardwalk shop. We took a quick Uber ride to the Borgata for their Burlesque show (which was AMAZING) and the Uber trips were quick to arrive and got us to our destination and back safely. Uber seemed to have "designated pick up spots" at our hotel and the Borgata, which was convenient since we didn't exactly know where to drop the pin on the map anyway. We had no complaints about location, it seemed to fit all our varied preferences.

Amenities:

The amenities list for this resort is a mile long! We wanted a resort because we wanted the option to split up safely if we wanted to and so we wouldn't have to venture out into the unknown streets constantly. Ocean Resort is a great choice for an all-in-one resort. Spa, nightclub, casino, food, drink, shops… it's all there. It's mostly adults at the resort so the majority of kids we encountered were in the indoor/outdoor pool and jacuzzi area. There weren't so many kids that it was a problem though. The indoor/outdoor pool took us forever to find (go straight through the spa entrance and just keep walking). That's also where the outdoor jacuzzi is located. This portion of the building is elevated above boardwalk level by seemingly 20 floors. There is poolside drink service.  The nightclub was truly awesome. We had a great time there, although drinks were expensive (in my opinion). They have recently opened their speakeasy, too, so that would be fun as well. It was still being renovated while we were there. They also have an event hall that had entertainment but no one was performing there during our stay.

Food and Drink:

All the restaurants we ate at were good. We didn't have any major complaints. Some coffee was better than others, some Bloody Mary's were better than others. The only truly gross coffee was the repulsive coffee maker in our hotel room.

Nightlife:

The HQ2 nightclub was a bunch of fun. If you like dancing and drinking it's a great time. The only major downside to the nightclub is that there is no seating. No bar stools, no tables, nothing. There are VIP areas with couches but we were not VIP. So my advice is to read the dress code and fit the dress code, but still choose comfortable shoes because if you're not flirting hard enough with a VIP table guy to get a chance to sit down, then your feet are going to scream! By the end of the night, the security guards didn't seem to mind if you removed your shoes but didn't seem to appreciate any kind of pile of shoes on the dance floor. Holding onto your shoes seemed to be tolerated though.

Accessibility:

There are elevators seemingly everywhere. We only saw escalators when we first walked in but we quickly figured out the multiple elevator system. People with fears of heights would probably dislike the windowed wall in the hotel rooms and the speed the elevator flies. It's so quick you have to pop your ears like you're flying!

Overall, the resort is HUGE so there's lots of walking around inside the resort to get to all the different amenities. This would be something to consider for people who can't walk for long periods or do so slowly. There are a few scattered seating areas in the hotel hallways but, without handrails throughout, I think the lengthy walks through the hotel would be slow and long for those who have trouble with mobility. We saw lots of folks with scooters throughout the resort and at the casino, so it seems that scooters were preferred over walkers.

Complaints:

Valet was a bit of a struggle when we arrived and when we checked out. When we arrived, the valet dropped a bag with a candle in it and shattered the candle. This isn't world ending by any means but a bit careless. Then on our way out we had lots of trouble paying for the valet and getting a receipt. Eventually they gave up and we weren't charged. Then the valet packed the trunk for us, but he didn't do a fantastic job so we had to reconfigure when we stopped for breakfast on our way out of town. Again, not world ending but not preferable.

The Burlesque club inside the resort was closed and being renovated into a Speakeasy. This is a cool transformation that I'm overall excited about but it wasn't done in time for our stay so we had to see a Burlesque show elsewhere. It wasn't clear on the advertisements that it was closed for renovation and that the speakeasy was not yet open. The speakeasy is now open, though!

The hotel doesn't have great signage for check-in when your first enter the building from where you drop the car with the valet. There's pretty adequate signs for the casino all over though. Our room was easy to find once we checked in, too. The pools did not have great signs. I finally asked for directions to it on our second day there and got a map. A map would have been good to have from check-in so I would recommend asking for one when you arrive.

Highlights:

The view from the rooms. The floor-to-ceiling, wall-to-wall, windows are pure luxury. It's a beautiful place to stay!

Who it's good for:

Girls trips, 20 somethings, honeymooning, Bachelorette parties, and groups age 21+.  It is NOT good for kids or those under 21 years old. Depending on your family dynamic, it could be a fun "adults only" getaway. Instagrammers’ delight, as it is very picturesque throughout.
