Drinking PreWorkout has totally changed our training sessions. In a nutshell, it has increased our motivation, focus, and endurance in the gym. We started drinking it when we were still going to classes at Vibe, where barely anyone else was drinking it, aside from those who used Shakeology. We got lots of questions about it. PreWorkout is a powdered mixture of caffeine, vitamins, and other supplements that comes in a canister with a scoop. Its purpose is to give you energy, focus, drive, motivation, etc. to get through your workout. Different PreWorkouts claim to provide different benefits, but all fall under the same premise. Using the scoop, you mix the appropriate amount of powder into a shaker or blender bottle with water, then shake. Once the powder is thoroughly mixed, you drink it fairly quickly. It is recommended that you drink it about 30 minutes before beginning your workout.
We have lots of tips and tricks for utilizing PreWorkout from our trial and error. I find that I cannot drink it too quickly. I am super prone it the itchiness and tingles that can be a side effect of PreWorkout; to be fair my body reacts really dramatically to lots of products, foods, and drinks, so take any dramatic reaction my body has with that context. Additionally, the accuracy of the tingling or itchiness of the preworkouts could be swayed by the possibility of building a tolerance to the ingredients that cause those feelings, like Beta-Alanine and Niacin.
Sam’s husband is a powerlifter and has drank PreWorkout for years. He was consulted on the beginning of our PreWorkout journey and his shaker cup collection continues to supplement our use. Thanks, Matt!
The most important thing to consider when beginning to drink PreWorkout is to read the nutrition information, ingredients, and directions on the canister or trial packet before use. Then, use less than the suggested portion for your first few uses and adjust from there. Inch your way to using more or less powder.
My faves so far have been Burn 2.0 and Vice. Even though telling people we were drinking Psychotic was fun, it increased my heart rate to the point that is was sickening. I remember doing a rep of squats on the smith machine then sitting down near the smith machine for multiple minutes while my heart rate went back down enough for me to do my next rep. It was just so uncomfortable. Burn 2.0 and Vice do not increase my heart rate as much, but they do taste great and support my endurance throughout our workout. Our training sessions often last around three (3) hours so endurance is very important. That’s not to say we don’t take breaks to solve the world’s problems, go pee, and refill waters, because we definitely do. Training together is also a social activity for us - look out for a post about our Gym Journey coming soon!
If you feel like you could use a boost to jumpstart your training session, consider adding a PreWorkout drink. Choose a flavor you think you’ll enjoy the taste of, read the info on the canister, try it first with less than the recommended amount, and then take note how it may impact your training session. Comment below about your favorite PreWorkout! You know we are always on the hunt to try new ones!
UPDATE: in the last two months we have really laid off the preworkout drinks. We are going through another transitional period in our journey and it hasn’t proved necessary for us. I will do another post getting more in depth about this, but overall, we are still able to maintain stamina and accomplish just as much without it.
